Dog friendly game: Paw Command

Looking for a trick to teach your buddy in your free time? sploot has ideas!

The trick of a dog offering you its paw is a simple yet very entertaining one. It won't take long for you to train your dog to give you his paw, but it should only be taught in short bursts, over a few days. Eventually, your dog will be able to give you its paw and then even shake paw-to-hand with you.

Here’s how you can teach them:

  1. Show them the treat: Get your dog’s attention and show your dog that you have a treat in your hand.
  2. Hold the treat just above your dog’s nose (not too high or your dog might jump). This will make your dog sit. Ask for their paw. As soon as they touch your hand with their paw, give a treat and say "Yes".
  3. Add a Verbal Cue: Add the verbal cue, such as "Paw." Say the cue firmly and clearly while still holding the treat near the dog's nose.
  4. Continue to Practice: Hold short training sessions throughout the day in various locations, both indoors and outdoors. End training session on a positive note (with a success). Be patient and consistent.

Have fun teaching, and tell us if your dog learnt it!
